Software Europe Update

We are pleased to announce the dates of The Software Europe 2006 User Group. Our User Group offers an excellent opportunity to learn more about your products, discuss new developments and find out how other customers are using solutions to their best business advantage.

Those of you who are responsible for the Disaster Recovery at your site will also be interested to read about the new functionality provided by our Tape/Copy solution. The latest release allows you to direct tape datasets to DASD during the recovery process.

There has been further improvement in recent weeks to our security event manager, InSight™. The SEM Module provides network managers with a robust tool for monitoring perimeter threats. This will now help you to continuously monitor and detect, in real-time, when one of the assets under your protection is at risk.

As this is our last issue of 2005, I would like to take this premature opportunity to wish you all a very 'Happy Christmas & New Year'. Our technical team will be available to you throughout the festive period so please, as ever, do not hesitate to contact us if you are having any issues.

See you in 2006!

  • Batch Tuning & Catalog Management
    • For users of SmartProduction and CIM
  • Model 204 Development
    • For users of Sirius development tools

New Functionality for Tape/Copy - Virtual Data Recovery

A new Tape-to-Disk Recovery option is available for Virtual Data Recovery (VDR). This new functionality is available in the latest release, 2.6.1, and is designed to allow users without virtual tape libraries at their disaster recovery sites to direct tape datasets to DASD during the recovery process.

This method of recovery allows users to save physical tape resources, while allowing concurrent dataset access for application and database recovery jobs that might otherwise encounter contention when trying to access datasets on the same stacked, physical tape volume. The Tape-to-Disk Recovery option also boosts the integrity of recovery for those users that use homegrown JCL and processes to copy their restored tape data to DASD after it’s been recovered.

“Typically, using a user-written process rather than an automated software solution, increases the risk of DR failure because the user or department who wrote the process may not have adequate resources to properly maintain it”, said Don Bolton, Product Manager. “Implementing an automated solution, like VDR, reduces the margin for DR failures caused by human error or lack of resources. Adding Tape-to-Disk Recovery provides our users with yet another way to automate the recovery of their tape datasets.”

In addition to the Tape-to-Disk Recovery option, VDR continues to support recovering data “In-Place” by updating MVS and tape management catalogs without moving any data so the production jobs read the datasets from the backup tapes without modifying any production JCL. The Tape-to-Tape Recovery option, which copies dataset from the backup tapes to another tape media for recovery, can also be used. All of VDR’s recovery options can be implemented without a virtual tape library at the DR site.

About Virtual Data Recovery (VDR)

VDR is a cost-extra, add-on option for Tape/Copy. VDR allows users to create stacked backup tapes of critical datasets, using new dataset names so that both the original dataset and the backup copies can be cataloged, then simplifies the restore process by building all of the required recovery JCL and performing all required tape management catalog and MVS catalog updates. VDR users also have access to Tape/Copy’s many tape stacking and migration features.

UKCMG Industry Forum - Monday 21 November 2005

Each year UKCMG hold a one-day conference with two-track agenda covering the core subjects of the group. This event will take place on 21st November 2005 and will be held at the Hilton Hotel, Olympia, London. Software Europe are pleased to be included in the events agenda:

Track A: Mainframe
16:10 – 17:00: Understanding your Disk Subsystems
presented by Gilbert Houtekamer, Intellimagic,
on behalf of Software (Europe) Ltd

RMF Magic provides performance reporting about Disk Subsystems attached to multiple z/OS systems, automatically consolidating RMF information into a disk-centric view.

An extended period of multiple weeks can be analysed in a single run. The product provides a large number of pre-defined charts and reports in Excel for regular reporting and capacity planning, as well as custom reporting capabilities for performance debugging.   Its graphical outputs enable a quick determination of hotspots and tuning opportunities.

RMF Magic not only shows standard RMF values like I/O rate, response time, cache hit, etcetera, but also has the capability to compute read and write Mbytes/s values at a volume level.
